24 Therefore this is what the Lord [a]God of armies says: “My people, you who dwell in (A)Zion, (B)do not fear the Assyrian [b]who (C)strikes you with the rod, and lifts up his staff against you the way Egypt did. 25 For in a very (D)little while (E)My indignation against you will be ended and My anger will be directed toward their destruction.” 26 The Lord of armies will (F)wield a whip against him like the defeat of (G)Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His (H)staff will be over the sea, and He will lift it up (I)the way He did in Egypt. 27 So it will be on that day, that [c]his (J)burden will be removed from your shoulders, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because (K)of fatness.

28 He has come against Aiath,
He has passed through (L)Migron;
At (M)Michmash he deposited his (N)baggage.
29 They have gone through (O)the pass, saying,
(P)Geba will be our encampment for the night.”
(Q)Ramah is terrified, and (R)Gibeah of Saul has fled.
30 Cry aloud with your voice, daughter of (S)Gallim!
Pay attention, Laishah and [d]wretched (T)Anathoth!
31 Madmenah has fled.
The inhabitants of Gebim have sought refuge.
32 Yet today he will halt at (U)Nob;
He (V)shakes his fist at the mountain of the [e](W)daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

33 Behold, the Lord, the [f]God of armies, will lop off the branches with terrifying power;
Those also who are (X)tall in stature will be cut down,
And those who are lofty will be brought low.
34 He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an iron axe,
And (Y)Lebanon will fall by the Mighty One.

Question of the Sabbath

23 (A)And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while (B)picking the heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, (C)why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25 And He *said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry; 26 how he entered the house of God in the [a]time of (D)Abiathar the high priest, and ate the [b]consecrated bread, which (E)is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?” 27 Jesus said to them, (F)The Sabbath [c]was made [d]for man, and (G)not man [e]for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord, even of the Sabbath.”

Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

(H)He (I)entered a synagogue again; and a man was there whose hand was withered. And (J)they were watching Him [f]closely to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, (K)so that they might accuse Him. He *said to the man with the withered hand, [g]Get up and come forward!” And He *said to them, “Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm, to save a life or to kill?” But they kept silent. After (L)looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He *said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately began [h]conspiring with the (M)Herodians against Him, as to how they might put Him to death.

(N)Jesus withdrew to the sea with His disciples; and (O)a large multitude from Galilee followed, and also from Judea, and from Jerusalem, and from (P)Idumea, and beyond the Jordan, and the vicinity of (Q)Tyre and Sidon, a great number of people heard about everything that He was doing and came to Him. (R)And He told His disciples to see that a boat would be ready for Him because of the [i]masses, so that they would not crowd Him; 10 for He had (S)healed many, with the result that all those who had (T)diseases pushed in around Him in order to (U)touch Him. 11 And whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall down before Him and shout, “You are (V)the Son of God!” 12 And He (W)strongly warned them not to [j]reveal who He was.

Prophecies about Babylon

13 The (A)pronouncement concerning (B)Babylon which (C)Isaiah the son of Amoz saw:

(D)Lift up a flag on the [a](E)bare hill,
Raise your voice to them,
(F)Wave the hand that they may (G)enter the doors of the nobles.
I have commanded My consecrated ones,
I have also called for My (H)warriors
Who boast in My eminence,
To execute My anger.
A (I)sound of a roar on the mountains,
Like that of many people!
A sound of an uproar of kingdoms,
Of nations gathered together!
The Lord of armies is mustering the army for battle.
They are coming from a distant country,
From the [b](J)farthest horizons,
The Lord and the weapons of His (K)indignation,
To (L)destroy the whole land.

Judgment on the Day of the Lord

Wail, for the (M)day of the Lord is near!
It will come as (N)destruction from [c]the Almighty.
Therefore (O)all hands will fall limp,
And every human (P)heart will melt.
They will be (Q)terrified,
Pains and anguish will take hold of them;
They will (R)writhe like a woman in labor,
They will look at one another in astonishment,
Their faces aflame.
Behold, (S)the day of the Lord is coming,
Cruel, with fury and burning anger,
To make the land a desolation;
And He will exterminate its sinners from it.
10 For the (T)stars of heaven and their constellations
Will not flash their light;
The (U)sun will be dark when it rises
And the moon will not shed its light.
11 So I will (V)punish the world for its evil
And the (W)wicked for their wrongdoing;
I will also put an end to the (X)audacity of the proud
And humiliate the (Y)arrogance of the [d](Z)tyrants.
12 I will make mortal man (AA)scarcer than pure gold
And mankind than the (AB)gold of Ophir.
13 Therefore I will make the (AC)heavens tremble,
And (AD)the earth will be shaken from its place
At the fury of the Lord of armies
In (AE)the day of His burning anger.
14 And it will be that, like a hunted gazelle,
Or like (AF)sheep with no one to gather them,
Each of them will turn to his own people,
And each of them will flee to his own land.
15 Anyone who is found will be (AG)thrust through,
And anyone who is captured will fall by the sword.
16 Their (AH)little ones also will be dashed to pieces
Before their eyes;
Their houses will be plundered
And their wives raped.

Babylon Will Fall to the Medes

17 Behold, I am going to (AI)stir up the Medes against them,
Who will not value silver or (AJ)take pleasure in gold.
18 And their bows will [e]mow down the (AK)young men,
They will not even have compassion on the fruit of the womb,
Nor will their (AL)eye pity [f]children.
19 And (AM)Babylon, the (AN)beauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldeans’ pride,
Will be as when God (AO)overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
20 It will (AP)never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation;
Nor will the (AQ)Arab pitch his tent there,
Nor will shepherds allow their flocks to lie down there.
21 But (AR)desert creatures will lie down there,
And their houses will be full of [g]owls;
Ostriches also will live there, and [h]shaggy goats will frolic there.
22 [i]Hyenas will howl in their fortified towers
And jackals in their luxurious (AS)palaces.
Her fateful time also [j]will soon come,
And her days will not be prolonged.

Israel’s Taunt against Babylon

14 When the Lord (AT)has compassion on Jacob and again (AU)chooses Israel, and settles them on their own land, then (AV)strangers will join them and attach themselves to the house of Jacob. The peoples will take them along and bring them to their place, and the (AW)house of Israel will make them their own possession in the land of the Lord (AX)as male and female servants; and [k]they will take their captors captive and will rule over their oppressors.

The Fifth Trumpet: Shaft of the Abyss

Then the (A)fifth angel sounded, and I saw a (B)star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the (C)key to the (D)shaft of the abyss was given to him. He opened the shaft of the abyss, and (E)smoke ascended out of the shaft like the smoke of a great furnace; and (F)the sun and the air were darkened from the smoke of the shaft. Then out of the smoke came (G)locusts [a]upon the earth, and power was given them, as the (H)scorpions of the earth have power. They were told not to (I)hurt the (J)grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the people who do not have the (K)seal of God on their foreheads. And [b]they were not permitted to kill [c]anyone, but to torment for (L)five months; and their torment was like the torment of a (M)scorpion when it [d]stings a person. And in those days (N)people will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death [e]will flee from them!

The [f](O)appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like human faces. They had hair like the hair of women, and their (P)teeth were like the teeth of lions. They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the (Q)sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle. 10 They have tails like (R)scorpions, and stings; and in their (S)tails is their power to hurt people for (T)five months. 11 They have as king over them, the angel of the (U)abyss; his name in (V)Hebrew is [g](W)Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name [h]Apollyon.

12 (X)The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still coming after these things.

The Sixth Trumpet: Army from the East

13 Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard [i]a voice from the [j]four (Y)horns of the (Z)golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the (AA)four angels who are bound at the (AB)great river Euphrates.” 15 And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were (AC)released, so that they would kill a (AD)third of mankind. 16 The number of the armies of the horsemen was (AE)two hundred million; (AF)I heard the number of them. 17 And this is how I saw (AG)in my vision the horses and those who sat on them: the riders had breastplates the color of fire, of hyacinth, and of [k](AH)brimstone; and the heads of the horses are like the heads of lions; and (AI)out of their mouths *came fire and smoke and [l](AJ)brimstone. 18 A (AK)third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the (AL)fire, the smoke, and the [m]brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and with them they do harm.

20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, (AM)did not repent of (AN)the works of their hands so as not to (AO)worship demons and (AP)the idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk; 21 and they (AQ)did not repent of their murders, nor of their (AR)witchcraft, nor of their (AS)sexual immorality, nor of their thefts.
